So I just finished watching Heartcatch Precure, and unless Smile Precure suddenly becomes totally awesome for the rest of the seriers, Heartcatch is the better of the two Precure shows I have seen, mostly because of the inclusion of Cure Sunshine. However, instead of writing a whole post dedicated to Cure Sunshine/Itsuki Myoudouin, let’s talk about the antagonists of the story, or more specifically the Cadets of Sabark (Sasorina, Kumojacky and Cobraja). Spoilers ahead
In particular, I’m very intersted in how Cadets of Sabark were all human being formally, but all have withered heart flowers that somehow made them into the Cadets of Sabark, helping out Dune to destroy the world. Each of them, like any other human beings in the show, had their own heart flower, all with a meaning in flower language that relates back to either their passion/personality./pain. This is in line with the overall message of the series, of to not lose heart in all that you do, even if you feel you are trekking on desert. However, I do believe that presence and the whole story relating to the Cadets of Sabark gives a similar, but more extreme, message that we see every week, of how they lost their heart and let their passions/etc withered so much that it led to this disastrous state of working for Dune (similar to how the Desertrian are working for them to destroy the planet). Similar to why Professor Tsukikage went to the dark side, the three might either have lost passion of what they were so passionate for because they were stuck, but different, and might be in a worse situation than the professor, they became the antagonists by the own decision and was not mind-controlled by Dune. One have to wonder how much they three must have fallen in order for them to be in such place, and it is pretty haunting for audiences to realize the possibility for one to fall so much to become evil without the need of the Cadets to use our withering hearts to make us into a Desertrian, letting us go berserk from our pains and worries.
Another striking point is the resemblance between Cadets of Sabark and Cure Marine, Cure Sunshine and Cure Blossom. Both Cure Sunshine and Kumojacky are both well versed in stregnth related topics, with Itsuki, the grand-daughter of a dojo master, and with her sickly brother, convinced her to be the future dojo master, while Kumojacky’s passion was in fighting. While Itsuki primary desire that caused her to become a Desertrian was less about her strength, but it was also because of that incident and her being a Precure with the rest of the team that she not only come to accept her fighting abilities (along with the love for cute things) but also better know how to use it to protect others. In a sense, that might have been what Kumojacky suffered, as he is convinced by Erika’s speech before his departure.
Cure Blossom and Sasorina were similar in the loneliness that they experience(ed). For Blossom, or Tsubomi, it was not until the start of this show that she started becoming more active in making friends, and the show have shown her suffering from loneliness more than once, with her lowest times when her parents were still ultra busy with their jobs. As for Sasorina, as seen from the meaning of her heart flower and her waking up from an isolated hospital, she must also have experienced loneliness, up to the point that caused her to become a part of the Cadets of Sabark. Really good thing of Sasorina, she was able to finally able to integrate back with the society and became a kindergarten teacher, giving constant attention to the kids and almost always receiving constant attention.
For Cure Marine and Cobraja, well, aside from both of the aspiring to be fashion designers, they less a lot less common in terms of personality. However, from Cobraja’s flower, his definition for beauty and his personality, we can deduce that he might have suffered because of his chase for outward beauty without care for the inner beauty, and his ego of wanting to be the star instead of supporting the stars (I donno fashion, I donno what I’m really talking about). This is similar to Cure Marine’s issue back in the very beginning, where she envied her older sister for being a model, wanting all the glory she thinks her sisters is having, all without realizing the effort and sacrifices that her sister had made to become one. Only realizing that she was she finally going all in to fashion design, which she most likely got to design for her sister and get praised for.
Just like how Dark Precure is the other side of Cure Moonlight, each member of the Cadets of Sabark reflects the suffering side of the rest of the Precure member, the side that they overcame and later accepted when they became a Precure.
